Soon-to-be Ag Volunteer

Hi all. I am a hopefully-soon-to-be Peace Corps Volunteer to "western sub-saharan francophone Africa" -- I've been "nominated" and have my dental and medical in and am now awaiting either one of those to be bounced back again or the official invitation. I'm supposed to ship out in February as an agricultural volunteer (I'm a beekeeper).

The laptop I've had for the last 5 years recently fried, and it recently came to my attention that it's NOT out of the question to bring a laptop to Africa, so I guess I'm in the market for a laptop. Unfortunately my budget is "as cheap as possible" as I'll be glad just to bring my credit card debt down to zero before I ship out.

But more than just get questions answered here I'd like to add some PC folks to my friends list to read whatever they happen to have to say about PC stuff and/or to respond to any PC related entries I may make. So hi!

Oh and my geeky interests it's really only habitual bloggery and photo posting. And occasionally playing circa 1998 computer games like Civ III or even older (nethack for the win!)

Palm pilots in Malawi

I´ve been debating about bringing my or a laptop to Malawi, but more and more I´m thinking the best idea is to get the pro version of documents to go on my palm pilot (and a solar charger, of course) and just take my palm. I can write emails on it pretty easily and use USB connections or SD slots to upload the files. And if I buy a bunch of SD cards, I can take a lot of music with me, too.

Is that still too much tech, or does it sound all right  (I´m travelling in Costa Rica right now and don´t have a question mark, so please excuse the awkward punctuation.) Will it actually be useful_

Interests?
Just to see if I've got your attention...

Any LJ Interests any of you would like to add?

The ones I put up are mostly tech-based, but we could use some more.

First Post!
Just like our Peace Corps assignments, this community is what we make of it. Geeks come in all kinds, and this community is open to that.

To introduce myself, I am a PCV in Suriname, for the Small Business program. I work with WWF (pandas, not wrestlers) and have been spending my time in the past months helping with their website, media production, and preparing education materials. I use my laptop daily. (I'm using it now!)

As for my geeky interests, I enjoy working with computers and technology, playing on the internet, reading comic books and science-fiction, playing tabletop and live-action roleplaying games, fencing with the SCA, working at renaissance faires, downloading good TV shows, and watching clips on YouTube.

I bought a laptop specifically for the Peace Corps, an Averatec 1050. I also brought my Nintendo DS, a Sony digital camera, and an 30GB iPod Photo. (The camera and iPod where lost when my bag was stolen, but have since been replaced by a very old Fuji camera and by a Creative Zen Micro. I have not had any other issues with gadget theft.)

And I am very glad that I brought everything with me, as they've all been useful.

Oh, and the icon for the group is my DS. ;)
